Rumors Suggest New Nikon D40 Budget dSLR

There are plenty of rumors circulating about that Nikon will soon announce their newest dSLR, the Nikon D40. Although these rumors have not been substantiated, several photos of the D40 have shown up on several websites. This may indeed be a viral marketing technique used by Nikon to create buzz about their new camera even before its official announcement.

From various reports it seems that the Nikon D40, if in fact real, will have a 6.1-megapixel sensor (the same as the Nikon D50 and D70), 3-point AF, 1/4,000 shutter speed, ISO 200-3200, 2.5" back LCD display, and (from pictures) no top LCD display. The compact SLR may sell for as little as $499, effectively making it an "SLR for the masses." It would certainly work well as an inexpensive alternative to the new Nikon D80; appealing to anyone who wants to take great photos but doesn't have $1000+ to spend.
