In addition to the new Nikon D40 dSLR and 18-55mm ED II Lens, Nikon announced today their latest speedlite flash offering, the
SB-400. The external flash unit, with i-TTL
flash operation, is one of the most lightweight, compact units offered
by Nikon. The SB-400 is specially designed for Nikon's entry-level
digital SLRs (like the new D40), but can also be used on the more
professional D2 models.
According to Nikon, the SB-400 speedlite's "flash head can be tilted in 4 steps, horizontal,
60, 75 and 90 degrees, and has a flash shooting distance range from
0.6m to 20m (depends on the ISO setting). Slow Sync, Red-eye Reduction
and other flash modes can also be set on the camera body." The speedlite can be controlled in i-TTL and the new D40’s manual mode. It has a guide number of 30 (ISO 200, m), and an easy to use bounce flash option.
