The Canon EF 24-105mm f4L IS USM is essentially the mid-range lens for Canon's popular L-series. The series also included the EF 17-40 f4L USM on the wide angle end, and the EF 70-200 f4L USM on the telephoto end. Of these three, the EF24-105mm lens certainly has the broadest appeal, as it is capable of shooting some wide angle and telephoto shoots, as well as everything in between. This wide range makes it a very versatile lens that can be used in a variety of situations.

One of the most important features of the EF 24-105mm f4L IS USM lens is the image stabilizer (IS). Gyro sensors detect small movements and vibrations caused by camera shake, "triggering the corresponding movement of a correcting lens group perpendicular to the optical axis. This alters the light path, returning the image to its correct position on the sensor or film plane." The end result is that users can shoot at lower shutter speeds (up to 3-stops lower) and still receive the same level of image sharpness. This is especially useful in low-light conditions.

The autofocus is very responsive as well. The ring-type USM motor on the EF 24-105mm f4L IS USM uses ultra-sonic frequency vibrations to quickly, quietly, and accurately adjust the focus. A built-in CPU and improved holding torque also helps achieve a high level of precision and accuracy. In addition, "photographers can choose manual focus instantly and at any time simply by moving the manual focus ring without first having to switch out of autofocus mode."

The lens has a Ultra-Low Dispersion glass (UD) element to completely remove secondary chromatic aberrations that can reduce sharpness and create color fringing. Aspherical lens elements also reduce spherical aberration, allowing image sharpness, contrast, and quality to be maintained throughout the entire photo. Finally, the common effects of flare and ghosting are dramatically reduced by a Super Spectra lens coating that absorbs light and reduces unwanted reflections.
